Senani Ratnayake, BSc RVT
Owner/Founder
Senani attended Queen’s University and the University of Guelph where she completed a Bachelor of Science before pursuing Veterinary Technology at Ridgetown College, graduating in 2002.
She has been educating veterinary professionals for over 17 years and has received multiple awards for her contributions to veterinary medicine, including most recently the Founders Award from Dr. Andy Roark’s Uncharted Veterinary Community. She is a sought-after and well-respected veterinary consultant and speaker.
From small animal general practice and emergency/ICU, to running a dermatology referral service, managing a practice and then working with Hill’s Pet Nutrition as both a Prescription Diet representative and the Science Diet media spokesperson, she kept coming back to her strength in communication. She used her experiences and knowledge, combined with her natural way with words, to become a catalyst for change within the industry.
In early 2011 Senani officially launched Motivatum Consulting, an umbrella to house the veterinary communications and leadership work she had been doing for the previous eight years.
Senani spent 6 years working as a consultant for the Shareholders of Veterinary Purchasing – coaching owners, managers and associate veterinarians, training team members, and supporting the individual business needs of the hospitals with customized operations, marketing and team strategies. She then spent three years working as the Director of Learning and Engagement for a Canadian corporate group of veterinary hospitals. Outside of veterinary medicine, Senani works as a facilitator for Learn2 Solutions from time-to-time, delivering innovative programs that empower organizations to achieve business results.
Working in practice, industry and with a corporate group, she has gained a unique perspective and utilizes these insights to relate to, and engage with veterinary medicine professionals. She is currently the Director of Learning and Engagement at Vet Alliance where she is focused on building a best-in-class platform of support for independently owned Canadian hospitals and their teams. She encompasses her desire to build momentum through motivation by creating interactive workshops and thought-provoking seminars through the lens of communication. Senani is best known for her sessions on management, leadership, communication, team building, customer service and compliance. She is also a popular coach and mentor for DVMs and RVTs who appreciate her authentic and honest approach to their personal success.
Senani is a Past President of the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians and is also a facilitator for the OAVT Professionalism and Ethics course. She participates on a variety of veterinary related committees and is a Past President of the Toronto Academy of Veterinary Medicine where she was also a contributor to their quarterly publication, The Scalpel. She received the OAVT Honorary One Year Membership Award in 2010, was honoured with the OAVT award for Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to the Profession in 2015, awarded 'Best Woman in Human Resource Management' by Women in Management - Canada Chapter in 2019 and felt especially priviliged to be voted by her peers to receive the Founders Award from the Uncharted Veterinary Community in 2020. Most recently, she was humbled to be awarded the 2021 RVT of the Year by the Registered Veterinary Technologists and Technicians of Canada.
A note from Senani...
Thanks so much for visiting my website! I love my work, and, it's important you know a bit about me. I'm love to nerd out - have impromptu dance parties (when my knees allow it!), listen to old scohol hip hop, do some nail art (it's my version of meditation because it forces concentration) and raising caterpillars to release swallowtail butterflies. My family is incredibly important to me and I like to spend as much time as possible with them. Together with my husband, my biggest fans Benjamin (a cheeky rescued cat), Elsa (a rescue Terrier from Texas) and Bridget (a shepherd x resuce from Manitoba) inspire me to be the best version of myself that I can be... every day!
